Regarding a recent Gannett Blog TV episode aimed at my estimated 500 gay readers, plus assorted other Judy Garland fans who also love newspapers, Anonymous@9:34 p.m. commented yesterday:

“I am sure there are many people on this blog with different sexual persuasions, but many people do not choose to expose them. Why (don’t) you stick with the issue at hand and report on Gannett. I paid good money to you to support your efforts, and I am disappointed with the negative tone of your so-called reporting. Please Jim, clean it up and earn the reputation you deserve.”

Let’s put this in context, using my favorite tool: hard data! Including this one, I’ve published 1,887 posts since this blog’s start. Here are the number of those posts mentioning the word:

  • Gannett: 1,204 (64% of all)
  • My domestic partner, Sparky: 50 (2.6%)
  • Gay or homosexual: 21 (1.1%)
  • Judy Garland: 1 — and this is it! (0.05%)

Besides, what’s not to love about a guy named Sparky?!

Recent snail-mail from new subscribers included a bonus: a copy of The Cincinnati Enquirer, featuring a story that’s sadly familiar to many of us: “Faces of the newly jobless.”

Our far-flung correspondents: A letter from Oz

November 25, 2008

There’s something a little, well, queer about a newspaper industry blog being edited by a 51-year-old gay man with a boyfriend named Sparky. Then again, maybe that explains a mysterious letter from a new subscriber who said they’re “a friend of Dorothy’s.” More in today’s Gannett Blog TV.
