Briefs: Burns said out; Indy’s Poortinga to Digital

In overnight e-mail, readers say:

  • Mike Burns, named corporate director/advertising early last year, has quit to become sales and marketing vice president at Freedom Newspapers, which owns Southern California’s Orange County Register and other papers.
  • Kevin Poortinga, vice president for product development at The Indianapolis Star, has been promoted to a new position at Gannett Digital. Effective July 28, Poortinga will become general manager/Digital Product Incubator at GCI’s McLean, Va., headquarters. Last year, Poortinga won Gannett’s first Innovator of the Year award for his work on the first mom’s site, launched at Indianapolis. (Question: What’s the Digital Product Incubator — and how’s that different from the DIG?)

As always, I appreciate further confirmation — and any additional details. Post a note in the comments section, below. To e-mail confidentially, use this link from a non-work computer; see Tipsters Anonymous Policy in the green sidebar, upper right.

Kevin is the perfect person to run an incubator on a large scale. Sounds like he will be doing at the corporate level what he did in Indy. He’s smart and innovative. Maybe this is a prelude to him taking over the DIG. If so, I might think about investing some money in GCI stock.

I heard that Maness has been relegated to the role of Dubow’s assistant. Anyone else hear that? I think it means that he is now in charge of making sure Dubow’s luggage makes it onto the corporate jet.

Kevin is a great guy and will be successful given the freedom to do what he does best.

Big loss with Burns leaving. He has a bright future. Suprised however he is staying in the media business.

i imagine the whole corporate ad team is looking for jobs – especially after last Friday

good for Kevin – he’s a terrific guy and a shot in the arm for the Digital group

I heard Burns was up for the pub job in Fort Collins. Maybe he is leaving because that didn’t pan out. I agree with anon 1:06 he is a real stand up guy. Hard worker, does the right thing, professional, great with employees and customers, treats the business like it was his own…..
No wonder he left! He is the anti-Gannett!

I’m wondering if Mike Burns knows something nobody else knows because he was at the corporate level and that’s why he left?

  6. Anonymous Says:

Yea, Mike is anti something. Nice guy, but an all me, all the time, me, me, me guy.

What’s so bad about that? Someone’s got to stand up for yourself right. We all know you don’t get it for the people we work for right? Just another BIG problem at the Gannett Company and another reason so many are saying c-ya!
