It’s not hard to see why Gannett is not taken seriously for its journalism.

Sure the folks in Virginia love the Mom, Pets, MediaMix sites . . . none of those pesky “journalistic ethics” to worry about. Sponsers want to add articles and content without full disclosure . . . No Problem! Gannett is doing it with their local TV talk shows in many markets where the person being interviewed pays the TV station to be on the show. No wonder the stock is tanking.

It’s silly to assume these kinds of sites are being established as a replacement for “real news.” Anybody who assumes they are is missing the point.

I think Gannett is smart in its attempt to expand into the realm of the online social…. ground already covered to some extent by Facebook, Myspace, and other such networks.

I’m not sure Journalistic integrity has anything to do with it, especially when its competitors are doing the same thing (http://www.wagnbrag.com – a Scripps offering).

It’s called competition, folks, and it’s how you stay in business when business looks bad. It’s easy to criticize the decision to roll out offerings of this nature when you’re not actually the person who has to make them.
